M Series Data Collection With Programmable Control

This application illustrates the M-Series DAC in a basic data collection environment. The application utilizes the M4 Base Unit, V82 Program Control Module, V84 Analog/Digital/Relay Module, and V74 RS232 Peripheral I/O Module.

  • Module 1 PCM - C Program Control Module
  • Module 2 Port 1 - Scanner 1 (Line 1)
  • Module 2 Port 2 - Scanner 2 (Line 1)
  • Module 2 Port 3 - Scanner 1 (Line 2)
  • Module 2 Port 4 - Scanner 2 (Line 2)
  • Module 3 Digital In 1 - Photo Eye (Line 1)
  • Module 3 Digital In 2 - Photo Eye (Line 2)
  • Module 3 Relay Out 1 - Alarm Line 1
  • Module 3 Relay Out 1 - Divert Line 1
  • Module 3 Relay Out 1 - Alarm Line 2
  • Module 3 Relay Out 1 - Divert Line 2

Description
This application takes place in a video tape duplication warehouse. The M4 is used to verify barcodes are properly affixed to the video tape packages.

Operation

Operation for Line #1 and #2 are the same. Photo eye #1 provides an indication to the M4 when a tape is in the scan field. Line #1 scanner (inputs #1 and #2), receives barcode data printed on the video tape package. Line #1 alarm relay is an output that energizes a pusher arm if the barcode data on the package is not readable or is missing. Line #1 divert relay is used by the host computer to produce an alternative action if a barcode is evaluated as not valid for the production run.

During normal operation, a video tape passes the photo eye at 80ft/min indicating to the PCM that a barcode should be read. When a barcode is read from one of the scanner inputs the barcode data is transmitted to the host and the host acknowledges receipt of the information.

If a barcode is not read by the time the photo eye #1 input goes low, a "noread" packet is sent to the host and alarm relay#1 is energized for 25ms. The host acknowledges the receipt of the "noread" packet.

If the barcode data sent to the host is not valid, the host sends a command to the PCM causing it to fire divert relay#1 for 5ms. This action diverts the video tape to a different conveyor for recirculation within the production process.
